Extending the Theory of Reasoned Action to Understand the Factors Influence Purchase Sustainable Apparel Intention among Chinese Consumer
Xiaofang Jin , Azizah Omar
Abstract: This study examines the influence of environmental apparel knowledge, attitude, and subjective norms on the intention to purchase sustainable apparel among Chinese consumers using an enhanced Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) model. Additionally, the study investigates the moderating role of greenwashing concern. Data was collected from 301 respondents through an online questionnaire, and structural equation modeling was used for hypothesis testing. The findings indicate that environmental apparel knowledge positively affects purchase intention, along with the original components of attitude and subjective norm from the TRA model. Furthermore, greenwashing concern negatively moderates the relationships between attitude, subjective norm, environmental apparel knowledge, and purchase intention. The limitations of the study include reliance on self-administered questionnaires and a focus on Chinese participants. This research emphasizes the importance of understanding each factor in promoting sustainable apparel purchase intention, enabling sustainable fashion brands, retailers, policymakers, and the public to take effective measures to increase consumer intention towards sustainable apparel in China. The study contributes to the sustainable fashion literature by examining the impact of environmental apparel knowledge within an extended TRA framework, with greenwashing concern as a moderator.
