Access and Benefit Sharing Models of Biodiversity Conservation in International and Comparative Law Perspective

M.Z.M.Nomani, Faizanur Rahman, Mohammad Rauf, Saif A. Khan

Abstract The Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) models of biodiversity conservation in international and comparative law perspective is mandated by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), 1992; Bonn Guidelines On Access To Genetic Resources and The Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits (FESB) Arising Out of Their Utilization, 2001 and Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the FESB Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization, 2010. These laws are meant for biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, fair and FESB which in turn obligate the member states to swing into action for devising ABS law and policy. The objective of international and comparative ABS regime abjures synergy with environmental sustainability, intellectual property (IP) and sui generis system. The results of the study reveal that ABS law represents municipal traditional knowledge (TK) system deeply reflecting on communitarian environmental management and IPR system. The critical analysis of prevalent doctrines on international, comparative and Indian biodiversity conservation laws and policies in qualitative and empirical research methods reveals a monistic legal order with variation in the national specific context. The study leads to the conclusion that the ABS regime discerns a competing set of interests of biodiversity resources, sustainable development, climate change, and environmental justice delivery. Moreover, the biological diversity legislation in general and ABS laws and policies, in particular, is attuned to FESB in monetary and non-monetary terms to nurture indigenous inspiration for sustainable use and biodiversity conservation in natural and applied scientific studies.

Wan Rosli Wan Ishak, Nur Syafarah Suhaiminudin

Abstract: Cornsilk is the by-product of maize and traditionally has being used to treat many ailments since ancient time. This study aims to investigate mineral composition, heavy metal and sensory acceptability of drink developed from cornsik which treated with different thermal treatments. The cornsilk was treated with two kinds of thermal treatments namely (steaming (SCD) and blanching (BCD)). Drink prepared from different treatments were investigated for determination of mineral composition using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and sensory evaluation. Results of macromineral shows that the concentration of K was the highest in control (2.55 mg/kg) followed by BCD (1.12 mg/kg) and SCD (0.30 mg/kg). Similarly, the concentration of Ca was also found to be higher in BCD (0.69 mg/kg) followed by control (0.65 mg/kg). In trace minerals, Zn was found to be the highest in BCD (1.14 mg/kg) followed by SCD (0.81 mg/kg) and control (0.54 mg/kg). Similarly, for Mn, it was also found to be abundant in BCD (0.46 mg/kg) followed by SCD (0.41 mg/kg) and control (0.39 mg/kg). For heavy metals, cornsilk drink contain low concentration of As but still below the allowable limit set by Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985. Similarly, for sensory evaluation, no significant differences observed from the results whereby the scoring of attributes for all cornsilk beverages samples was likely similar from each other. However, the degree of acceptance from the sensory evaluation was ranked as follows; control>SCD>BCD. Reformulation of the cornsilk beverages is suggested to improve palatability.

Wahyu Taufiqurahman, Ari Widodo, Siswo Hadi Sumantri

Abstract: One of the main problems in maritime is the lack of security in coastal areas, particularly on the island of the Frontier, Outermost, and Underdeveloped (3T) category. Indonesia is an archipelagic state which has a geographical location consisting of many islands. Indonesia's maritime region has abundant resources, but there are still many that have not been managed well. One of the problems in coastal areas is the lagging of information facilities due to electrification. In some rural areas, electricity has not been available yet due to the limited infrastructure access, leading to high investment costs. In this study, maritime resources specifically sea waves are used to produce power that can charge portable devices of energy storage based on Lithium-ion batteries that can supply energy, so that the energy obtained can be utilized in supporting the defense of coastal areas. A portable energy storage system based on the lithium-ion batteries called Tabung Listrik or TaLis (DC-based power bank) and renewable energy house systems economically provides the best scheme to electrify coastal and rural area. This is designed to be portable so it is easy to carry around as well as it can be used for many purposes.

Safdar Husain Tahir, Mirza Muhammad Moazzam, Gulzar Ahmad, Muhammad Rizwan Ullah

Abstract: The study analyzes the impact of credit and systematic risk on capital structure and provides a comparison between seasonal and non-seasonal businesses operating in Pakistan. The research is conducted on sugar (seasonal) and textile sector (non-seasonal). A total of 50 firms (25 firms from each sector) were selected as sample. The data covered the period of 2010 to 2017. The data were gathered from annual published financial reports of sampled firms. The multiple regression models were used to analyze the impact of risk. The study revealed a negative impact of Credit Risk (CR) on Leverage (LV) both in seasonal and non-seasonal businesses. Increasing (decreasing) one point of CR causes to decrease (increase) LV by 0.27 points for seasonal business while increasing (decreasing) one point of CR causes to decrease (increase) LV by 0.15 points for non-seasonal business. The Systematic Risk (SR) has positive impact on LV in non-seasonal business but has no impact in seasonal business. Any increase (decrease) in the SR causes to incline (decline) LV by 2.68 units for non-seasonal business. It is recommended that the managers should not extend their level of debt beyond the specific limit to avoid bankruptcy risk. As the study reveals that the attitude of managers is risk averse, lenders should feel free to lend their surplus money to textile and sugar sector firms listed in Pakistan Stock Exchange. Managers of non-seasonal business firms should participate in trade off to maintain and control strategically the selected level of systematic risk.

Qin Xiaochuan, Gurnam Kaur Sidhu

Abstract: Oral English language presentations are often viewed as a proficient means to enhance the English speaking ability demanded by higher education and future careers. Yet in many institutions in China listening and speaking are often regarded as ‘black sheep’ in their EFL classrooms. Therefore, the main aim of this case study was to investigate EFL tertiary students’ perspectives of oral presentations and their self–perceived performance on oral presentation skills with a focus on delivery, content, organization and language use. This case study involved a total of 119 EFL students from four randomly selected EFL classes in an institution of higher learning in located in the province of Shanxi, China. Data were collected via a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with 11 volunteer students. The findings revealed that all students agreed that oral presentations were important for language learning and future careers but students’ self-perceived confidence and ability in all four aspects of oral presentations was low. The findings imply that instructors need to understand the importance of oral presentations in their EFL classrooms and reflect on their practices so that necessary steps can be taken to enhance students’ speaking skills.

External Knowledge Sources for the SMEs´ Environmental Innovations

Michaela Striteska, Viktor Prokop, Jan Stejskal, Petr Hajek

Abstract: The rapidly deteriorating quality of environment raises the need for innovation that reduce the environmental impact of economic activity. Since SMEs are considered as backbone of EU economy, they should play a crucial role in reduction of negative environmental impacts. The current empirical evidence show that environmental innovations require more external sources of knowledge/information, even more for SMEs. The main aim of the paper is to examine the importance of external sources of knowledge for environmental innovative SMEs with respect to non-environmental innovators and type of innovation. In total, we analyse 6,638 SMEs from Portugal which significantly improved its position in the European Environmntal Scoreboard over the past years and risen above the EU average. Our empirical analyses show that cooperation can positively contribute to the environemental innovation development. Most importantly, we investigate what type of cooperation is relevant for different types of environmental innovations. We show that cooperation with suppliers and customers from private sector is more significant in the process of environmental innovations creation than cooperation with universities or government. In the last part, we propose some practical implications.

Abstract: In moisture and wet conditions, the pipe inspection robot using pneumatic actuators is needed, as it has a high security feature that can prevent electric leakage as well as clean energy consumption. In the previous study, a pipe inspection robot using flexible pneumatic cylinders with two holding mechanisms that could move forward like an inchworm along the pipe by deforming the robot's body naturally had been proposed and tested. In that study, a pipe holding mechanism using an extension type flexible pneumatic actuator where volume change was small was developed. A compact bending unit using three extension type flexible pneumatic actuators was also developed. In this paper, to increase the driving force of the robot, an improved sliding mechanism that can extend, contract and bend in every direction is proposed and tested. Then the compact pipe inspection robot with the improved sliding mechanism using the flexible pneumatic cylinder will be presented and tested. The driving test of the robot travels in a complex pipe will also be carried out. As a result, it can be confirmed that the improved pipe inspection robot can pass through the complex pipe smoothly even if the pipe is set vertically.

Abstract: Based on the number of elderly in Japan and the decline in birth rates, the rehabilitation device that can be used at home has been desired. In such applications, a soft actuator that can move with longer strokes and produce greater force is useful for rehabilitation devices. Therefore, the flexible linear stepping actuators that can push and pull the flexible rod with a long stroke by changing the gripping position of the rod have been developed. The tested actuators can realize position controls without using any sensors. In this paper, the development of a portable continuous passive motion (CPM) device for human knee using two flexible linear stepping actuators is described. The construction and the operating principle of the CPM device will also be explained. As a result, it can be confirmed that the tested device can provide a stepping angular change to the knee. The tested device is safer for users as it has the back drivability while there is no supply pressure.

Kittiwat Sirikasemsuk, Kanogkan Leerojanaprapa

Abstract: A design of experiment is a computational technique which is used to select the significant independent variables. The well-designed experiments should reduce the experiment error. We refer to the blocking technique to prevent the error from other variables. This paper focused on the incomplete latin square design (ILSD) based on the blocking technique. The missing values from experiments often cause the unbalance design in which the instant formulae are not provided for the analysis of the variance. By means of the exact approach, this paper considered the incomplete latin square design of order 5 x 5 with the two missing values to develop the mathematical formulae for the estimated parameters for full and reduced effect models. Finally, it is easy to make the analysis of variance. It is noted that the mathematical formulae in this paper can be used to solve all indexes.

Cutting of Tires Using Ultrasonic Cutter with Resonant Frequency of 35kHz

Jeong Seok Seo, Yeon Ju Lee (Dong Sam Park)

Abstract: Ultrasonic cutting is widely used in various fields due to its ability to cut several materials such as foods, bones, aluminum alloys, new materials and thin sheet structures. Depending on the thickness of tires, nowadays, ultrasonic cutters with natural frequency 20 kHz or 40kHz have been used for tire cutting. In this study, a new ultrasonic cutter which can be widely used regardless of cutting thickness was developed and its cutting performance was verified. Modal analysis and harmonic response analysis were used for designing a new cutter with resonant frequency of 35 kHz, and the resonant frequency and vibration amplitude of the developed cutter were experimentally verified. The cutting performance of the new 35 kHz cutter was compared to the cutting performance of the conventional 20 kHz and 40 kHz cutters through a 10 mm thick tire cutting experiment. Experimental results showed that developed cutter could increase cutting performance. Roughness of cut surface was improved and hardened layer on the cut surface of tires was largely decreased, which could increase joining performance of tires in the post-process in tires production.

Experimental Analysis of Path-loss Exponent Estimation based on lower RSSI Variance in IEEE 802.15.4

Albert Sagalaa, Pandapotan Siagiana, Tulus P.Simanjuntaka, Ramot Lubisb

Abstract: Indoor localization has received significant attention over the last decade. The transceivers distance can be estimated by signal strength (SS) received in the receiver based on the path loss model obtained. For WSNs, it has been the most popular technique due to the simplicity of measuring the power received on a receiver. However, a distance estimation accuracy is limited by many factors, such as multipath propagation, shadowing and intrinsic hardware issue. To further improve the localization accuracy, a method to estimate the path-loss exponent (PLE) based on SS measurement variances were evaluated empirically. We use two Tmote Sky nodes to get SS from several points, from distance d= 1 m until d=30 m. In this study, a lower received signal strength (RSSI) variance from each measurement point (lower distance variance) was used as a reference to estimate the PLE. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this experimental analysis to evaluate different distance reference to estimate the PLE has never been reported before.

Biomass for High Temperature Ceramic Kiln

Ruedee Niyomrath

Abstract: The purposes of this research were to: (1) find a suitable model for the biomass to be used in the firing of high temperature ceramics products and design the biomass gas burner, and (2) design the ceramic kiln that uses biomass for ceramic production. The research found that: (1) Biomass gas burner is divided into 2 parts; biomass rods containing cylindrical shaped cylinders, and the biomass gas burner. The biomass rods used to be cylindrical, 1 bar of biomass rod completely dry leaves; weighs 3 kilograms, and sawdust, weighs 5 kilograms put in alternating layers together. The total weight of biomass rod was 8 kilograms. (2) High temperature kiln for ceramic product is a semi continuous kiln type down draft kiln with a capacity of 1 cubic meter, and with kiln car used to pack the product into firing. The kiln used a steel frame and wall with ceramic fiber, except the burner floor used the insulated brick, and there were 8 channels for biomass gas burner. (3) Testing the use of biomass gas burner and ceramic kiln found that: firing at 900 degrees Celsius using 15 biomass rods by 5 burners, using 120 kilograms of solid biomass takes 4 hours to fire; firing at 1,230 degrees Celsius using 48 biomass rods by 8 burners, the solid biomass used was 384 kilograms takes 6 hours and 30 minutes to fire. The distribution of temperature throughout the kiln was the same. The kiln can operate up to 1,250 degrees Celsius, can take time up to 7 hours to fire and use all 48 biomass rods for more ceramic products resulting in reduced firing efficiency.

Design of Recommender Service-oriented User Adaptation for Big Data Environment

Jinhong Kim, Sung-Tae Hwang

Abstract: Recommendation system is an information technology that commerce vendors have adopted so that customer can receive suggestions on the items that they will find interesting. These systems are a valuable assistant to the user purchase decisions and provide quality of push service. Traditionally, Recommendation System have been designed using a centralized system, but information service is growing huge and rapid scalability very big. Next generation technology like Cloud Computing and Big Data Environment has handle massive data and can support enormous processing. Nevertheless, analytic technologies are lacking in capabilities when processing big data. Accordingly, we will design to conceptual service model and propose new algorithm and user adaptation on recommendation system for big data environment.

BAYMURS: Bayesian Modeling-based User Adaptive Recommendation Service

Dong-Gyun Ryu, Jong-Yun Kim

Abstract: User Adaptive Service (UAS) as Personalized Recommendation provides software techniques supporting suggestions by a user experience. This suggestion is aimed at supporting their various experience or decision by making processes. In addition, personalized recommendation is to optimize service for individual needs and behaviors on Commerce market. This service is to allow user to customize the service itself, and adaptive their services is based on the information from past purchased historical data. Eventually, these approaches main function when user knows what they want, when their behaviors have to do, and preferences remain consistent over context. Accordingly, in this paper, we present UAS as a Bayesian Network Modeling (BNM) from commerce market.

The Effect of Good News and Bad News on Exports and Imports in Indonesia

Nanda Rahmi, Aliasuddin

Abstract: This study examines the effect of good news and bad news on the exports and imports of Indonesia using a threshold generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (TGARCH) model. Quarterly data from 1990.1 until 2017.2 are utilized in this study. The results show that the export function is theoretically and statistically significant. Furthermore, bad news has a more dominant effect on exports in Indonesia, as the study shows asymmetry information. Meanwhile, the import function of Indonesia is statistically and theoretically significant and good news has a more dominant effect on imports in Indonesia, also with asymmetry information. It is recommended that the government promote transparent management of exports and imports to increase trust in the exports and imports of Indonesia.

Wireless Ad Hoc Network based Routing Attack Authentication Mechanism

Jinhong Kim, Jong-Yun Kim

Abstract Wireless Ad Hoc Network has characteristic of dynamic topology by frequent movement of mobile nodes. However, this characteristic causes difficult routing and is exposed to many attacks easily. Therefore, a robust security technique must be applied to routing protocol determining the whole performance of the network. In this paper, we propose a secure routing technique by applying authentication of nodes and two-step attack detection using zone-based network structure. The network is divided into a non-overlapping area and zone manager node is selected to manage the nodes in the zone. The trust of nodes in the area is managed using this node and the member nodes are issued keys. Only nodes that have issued keys can join in the network. Also, the abnormal behavior detection is performed in the member node and the signature-based detection process is performed in the zone manager in order to detect the attack. The excellent performance of the proposed technique in this paper is confirmed by experiment.

Lawan Banjurtrungkajorn, Kingporn Thongbai, Montree Piriyakul, Ranee Esichaikul

Abstract: The purpose of this mixed methods research was to examine the role of leadership in transmitting influence of learning organization, technology and innovation on competitiveness of Thai exporting business. A structured and tested questionnaire was used as an instrument in quantitative research. The samples were 110 exporting firms that were randomly selected through stratified random sampling from 1,723 Thai exporting firms. The result showed that leadership played partial mediation in transmitting function. It was also revealed that leadership had direct effects on competitiveness of the firms. Technology and innovation were essential antecedents of competitiveness as they both left high direct effect and indirect effect on such outcome variable. All respondents valued learning efforts and had attempted to become learning organizations, so as to strengthen competitive advantages. Modern technology and innovation were also essential for business survival. Other hidden variables addressed by key informants through in-depth interviews came to light during this study for further investigation were: organizational culture, social capital, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and life-long education.
