Using Genetic Algorithm to Determine the Optimal Portfolio

Chien-Hua Wang, Wei-Hsuan Lee, Chia-Hsuan Yeh and Chin-Tzong Pang

Abstract: This paper considers a stock market in which we analyze the investment portfolio of the complex stock market. We use genetic algorithm to solve the optimization problem, including the chromosomal design, objective function setting and its role in investment analysis. Moreover, an appropriate selection, crossover and mutation operators are employed to select the stocks listed on the main board of the A-share market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The index weekly earnings of the market are used as the target index to analyze. The empirical analysis shows that our proposed algorithm is an effective method.

High Performance Activated Carbon Paper-Based electrode for Microbial Fuel Cells

Kenta Sato, Dang Trang Nguyen, Daiki Fujita, Ryuta Tobe, Hisaaki Mihara and Kozo Taguchi

Abstract: Microbial fuel cell (MFC) has been paid attentions as a new renewable energy resource. This study considered the evaluation of activated carbon (AC) paper as an anode and cathode electrode material for MFC. AC has novel properties that possesses a large specific surface area, a large amount of micropores and mesopores, low inner resistance and high biofilm adhesion. In this study, AC paper and hydrophilic carbon paper (CP) were prepared as the anode electrodes. The performance of the AC paper was compared to the hydrophilic CP in terms of methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity, Escherichia coli (E. coli) adsorption capacity, scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and power density characteristics. The produced maximum power density of 11.1μW/cm2 was generated by the AC paper, which is much greater than that of the hydrophilic CP. Moreover, we achieved 43% improvement in power density when using AC paper with larger thickness as cathode electrode. These results attributed to a large surface area and low inner resistance of the AC paper. The large surface area promoted biofilm growth and made electrochemical reduction reaction better, which enhanced the generation of power output.

Effect of ΔiscS deficiency on the current generation of E. coli in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract: Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are attracting attention as next generation clean energy. However, there is a disadvantage that the power generation is low. In this research, we investigated how it affects the electricity production by losing the electron transfer system ΔiscS of E. coli. The ΔiscS-deficient strain showed higher electricity production than the wild-type strain. In addition, similar results were obtained even if the number of bacterial cells of wild-type strain and ΔiscS-deficient strain (ΔiscS) was controlled to be the same number. These results indicate that ΔiscS deficiency in E. coli has a positive effect on the electricity production. This result provides new insight into the improvement of electricity production by E. coli in MFC.

Effect the single and mixture inoculation with Phosphate solubilizing bacteria, Azotobacter bacteria and P.floresence in growth and production of the corn (Zea mays L.) irrigated with different saline water

Mohamed Saeed Haran and Abdal Zahra Taha Thaher

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) to evaluate the effect of inoculation with five bacterial inoculants: non-inoculation and inoculation with Phosphate solubilizing bacteria, inoculation with Azotobacter bacteria and inoculation with P.floresence, The mixture bacterial inoculation by interacting with two saline levels of irrigation water (3, 6 ds.m-1), adding four levels of phosphorus (0, 40, 80, 120 kg P. ha-1) using the superphosphate fertilizer (52% P) and nitrogen and potash fertilizers were added to the fertilizing recommendation for yellow corn. The results showed that the mixture inoculation with Phosphate solubilizing bacteria, Azotobacter, and P. fluorescens was excelled on the inoculation treatments of single bacterial in most growth indicators for yellow corn plant which led to reduce the fertilizing recommendation, with a ratio of 33%. The inoculation with Phosphate solubilizing bacteria did not differ significantly from the inoculation with P. fluorescence bacteria in the most of studied traits, the mixture bacterial inoculation + salt level (3 ds.m-1) for irrigation water + the levels of phosphorus (120 kg P. ha-1) was excelled in the plant height, dry weight of the total vegetative, total grain yield and leaf area by giving it a percentages (33.08%, 31.90%, 61.07%, 36.94%), respectively, compared to the control treatment (non-inoculation, non-fertilization with phosphorus and level of saline water (6 ds.m-1)).
