Victoriomyces antarcticuson antagonism to the pathogenic fungi caused root rot disease in Catharanthus roseus

Ali H S Najdi and Ahmed M Hussein

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted in 2023, with the aim of isolating and diagnosing the pathogens that cause root rot disease on Vinca rose Catharanthus roseus plants from different nurseries in Najaf Governorate. The possibility of bio-control the pathogens using Victoriomyces antarcticus was also studied. Observations revealed that older C. roseus plants always showed more severe symptoms. The isolation showed the presence of pathogenic fungi where Fusarium solani, and Rhizoctonia solani were the most frequent ones. The pathogenicity test showed that R. solani and F. solani were significantly the most aggressive in resulted in complete failure of C. roseus seed germination on W.A. medium. However, the fungus V. antarcticus was isolated from C. roseus plants close to the highly infected plants and was molecularly diagnosed and tested to be non-pathogenic to the C. roseus plants. Results showed that V. antarcticus filtrates encouraged plant growth and showed inhibitory effect to the pathogenic fungi. In addition, HPLC analysis showed that heat-sterilized and/or fungal micro-filtrate yielded of higher concentration of the compounds, namely phenols, sugars, tannins, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, Ferulic acid, Caffeic acid, and phenolic acids, these compounds are known for their high biological effectiveness.
